In my series, "Phases of Reflection," I explore the interplay between traditional and modern artistic techniques as they relate to self-perception. This work combines various methods, including photogrammetry and hand-blown glass, to uncover layers of self-awareness presented through a dynamic interplay of shadow, light, and form.
Central to the series is a black and white self-portrait, captured on analog film and developed using traditional darkroom techniques. This approach not only underscores themes of personal exploration and authenticity but also honors the foundational elements of photography. The portrait provides a base for a series of glass sculptures that mimic my facial features.
The process begins with a clay model of my face, from which a plaster mold is created. Molten glass is then blown into this mold, subtly altering the original shape. The resulting glass, clear and fragile, starkly contrasts with the durable, definitive photograph, symbolizing the divergence between our tangible selves and our perceived identities.
The series features 14 pieces, each depicting a different phase of the glass overlaying the photograph. As the glass layers accumulate, they distort light and cast complex shadows, reflecting the multifaceted nature of identity that continually evolves yet originates from the same core.
"Phases of Reflection" invites viewers to delve into the nuanced dance between light, glass, and film, reflecting on the fluid and dynamic nature of self-perception. This series offers a journey into our inner worlds, engaging with our seldom-seen alter egos and exploring the layered complexity of identity.
