ABOUT
Alyona Movko-Mägi is an Estonian artist working with glass, analog photography, and digital technology. Based in the countryside near Lahemaa's wetlands, she explores how materials hold memory and transform over time.
Her practice, which she terms "bog methodology," follows the logic of Estonian peatlands—layered, patient, and resistant to simple interpretation. Working with kiln glass, darkroom printing, and interactive installations, she investigates how heritage, landscape, and cultural memory are embedded in both organic and digital forms.
Currently teaching at the Estonian Academy of Arts, she holds dual MA degrees in Contemporary Art and Craft Studies. Her recent solo exhibition SOO at the Estonian Museum of Photography achieved record attendance, bringing together sculptural objects, photographic processes, and responsive environments.
Her work has been shown at Tallinn Art Hall, Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, and Fotografiska. Named Video Artist of the Year in 2022 and 2024, her background includes extensive experience in projection mapping and live visuals for major Estonian cultural institutions.
From her studio beside the bogs, she creates glass sculptures, photography prints, and mixed media installations—bridging traditional Estonian craft techniques with contemporary technology.
