Family Portraits
Project type
silver gelatin contact prints
Date
2025
Family Portrait is a series of silver gelatin contact prints made without a camera. Machine learning models generated hybrid figures — part animal, part human, part imagined — which were displayed on a glowing screen. Instead of printing from a negative, the image was transferred through direct exposure: light from the screen touched the silver-coated paper, pressing spectral forms into being.
This process echoes early spirit photography, where light and chemical surface were believed to hold the presence of the unseen. Each print becomes a body of light — not a copy, but a trace. These are portraits made not from observation, but from projection. Fictional figures emerge from code and meet silver in the darkroom, hovering between algorithm and apparition.
